The Defense Department aims to deploy more civilian employees to combat zones to assume jobs done by military personnel stretched thin by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. To do this, the Pentagon is building a new database of civilian employee volunteers who possess critical skills. Defense will need medical workers, engineers, contracting officials, budget analysts and information technology specialists, to name a few.
